SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Dominican men's and women's track and field teams traveled down south this weekend to compete in the conference championships hosted by the Sea Lions of Point Loma. The conference tournament started Thursday and ran thru Saturday. Every athlete on the men's and women's side broke their personal record while our track athletes continued to break school records.
Thursday
Christian Alves, the junior out of Selma, got the Pengs underway in the conference championships as he finished 11
th in the men's hammer throw. Alves showed off his strength with a throw of 44.34m. This event took place at the renowned Olympic Training Center south of Point Loma's campus.
Friday
The action was back on the Sea Lions campus for day two of the conference championships where the men's javelin throw started the day.
Javier Machado and Jeroam Wood-Pina both showed off their arms with throws in the high 30s.
Lisandro Guzman, the junior out of San Rafael, took on the men's pole vault and posted a mark of 3.30m. On the women's side it was senior
Sienna Fassett finishing with a mark of 2.80m in the pole vault. Alves would come back for day two and display his strength with a top 10 finish in the men's discus throw with a throw of 40.91m. Sofia Addiego, the multi-sport athlete whose also on the women's basketball team, wrapped up the Pengs field events in the discus throw with a throw of 27.39m.
Adrian Aguirre, the senior leader for Dominican, got the track events started with a bang as he took first overall in the men's 110 hurdles prelim with a time of 14.14. This victory pushed Aguirre to the championships on Saturday.
Fellow senior
Jalydon Love out of Petaluma continued the hot start to the track events for the black and gold as he posted a third overall finish in the men's 400 dash prelims with a time of 47.41. This result also pushed Love to the final day of the championships.
LaNicia Ellis, the senior out of Stockton, was the next Penguin to join Love and Aguirre on Saturday as she placed third with a 56.27 time in the women's 400 dash prelims.
Sarah Chavez the senior out of San Bruno compete in the women's 800 run prelim and posted a top 15 finish. Ryan Nair, another multi-sport athlete who is also on the women's basketball team, ran in the women's 400 hurdles prelim and finished with a time of 1:08.29. Ellis would continue her dominant Friday by placing 2
nd in the women's 200 dash prelim.
Saturday
Alves got the final day of conference championships started as he threw in the men's shot put posting a mark of 12.42m. Then it was time for the men's 110 hurdles championships where Aguirre finished at the podium with a second-place finish.
Love, the Petaluma native, saw his fellow teammate Aguirre have a strong showing and decided to follow suit in the men's 400 dash championships. He would also finish in 2
nd with a time of 47.33. Ellis, the senior leader for the Pengs on the women's side, also found the podium in the 400 dash coming in at third place with a time of 55.29. She would then catch her breath and lock back up for the 200 dash where she would have a top five finish.
Rob Dawson, the grad student out of Memphis, finished off his last conference championships strong as he placed eighth overall in the men's 5000 run. Freshman
Louie Etta had a strong first championships as he placed 10
th in the steeplechase event.
After the individuals, it was time for the relays where the Penguins were stout as both their teams finished fifth overall.
Both teams will now prepare for the Payton Jordan Invitational and the Fresno State Invite May 2nd.Â
