Penguins conclude final tuneups of the 2026 track season

LOS ANGELES – Dominican track and field sent three athletes down to Southern California for one final chance to improve their marks and make the field for the 2026 NCAA Division II Championships.

Jalydon Love participated in both the APU Franson Last Chance and the CSULA Last Chance Meet improving his marks in both the 200 and 400. In Azusa, Love took the track in his premier event the 400 against some stiff competition and did not disappoint as he edged professional Dawson Mann by thousandths of a second to place seventh with a new Dominican record of 47.20. Love moved up nationally into the top 60 as he now sits at No. 54 in all of NCAA Division II. Love then wrapped things up Sunday in Los Angeles where he set a new personal best of 21.50 in the 200 but was not able to meet the provisional mark standard.

Adrian Aguirre also competed in the APU Franson Last Chance and recorded his second consecutive time under 14 seconds in the 110 hurdles posting a 13.96 to finish fourth with only professional athletes ahead of him. While Aguirre did not improve his best mark of the season, he will enter the championships ranked No. 12 nationally. Lanicia Ellis ran three times over the weekend in both meets as she took ninth in Azusa with a time of 56.13 in the 400 and 15th in the 200 with a time of 24.54. She took one last crack at the 400 at CSULA and finished first but her time was not improved as she crossed the line in 56.35. She ends her senior season ranked No. 63 nationally in the 400.

Those advancing to the national championships will head to Emporia, Kansas, with events beginning Thursday, May 21 at Francis G. Welch Stadium.
