Adrian Aguirre leads the pack on the way to his second PacWest 110H Title

Penguins turn in strong weekend across two meets

Adrian Aguirre competed in his first meet of 2026 for Dominican track and field and earned his first victory as the team was across Northern California with athletes at the Capital Invitational in Sacramento and the Johnny Mathis Track & Field Meet in San Francisco.

The Penguin men finished fifth at the Johnny Mathis Invitational out of 11 teams recording 19 points while Chico State earned the team championship. The Wildcats also won the women's team title with Dominican women finishing eighth with eight points.

Aguirre made his season debut at the Capital Invite and picked up where he left off as he won the 110 hurdles in 14.59 topping Hudson Hergenrader of Fresno Pacific by nearly a second. Jalydon Love added another notch to his accolades of 2026 as he took second in the 400m setting a new personal best of 48.45. Vivian Rodrigues added a fifth-place finish in the women's 100 crossing the finish line in 13.81 seconds, finishing 0.07 seconds behind Olivia Woods of Sacramento and 0.05 ahead of Sacramento's Leyla Golden.

Diego Montag led the Penguins in the men's 800m at the Johnny Mathis Invitational, placing sixth with a time of 1:57.84 in a photo finish. Montag matched Alaska Anchorage's Hunter Taddy to the hundredth of a second in the event, but Taddy edged him for fifth. On the women's side, Sarah Chavez set a new personal best in the 800m as she placed 12th with a time of 2:20.94 and Robles followed in 14th with a time of 2:22.11.

In the field events, Dominican women were led by Sofie Addiego who placed third overall in at the Capital Invite, her first as a Penguin, with a mark of 8.36 meters to set a new program record in the event. Addiego also finished third in the discus with a throw 24.69 meters, the second-best mark for a Penguin. Gia Chase added a fourth-place finish in the shot put at 8.19 meters and Stephanie Fayette was fifth at 7.76 meters, both setting new personal bests in the event. On the men's side, Gabe Sanchez finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 10.67 meters  and sixth in the discus with a throw of 29.43 meters, a new personal best. Michael Gonzalez Lopez placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 9.63 meters and seventh in the discus at 23.54 meters.

Dominican returns to action at the Fresno State West Coast Relays beginning Friday at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California.
