Penguins see improvements at Wildcat Invitational

CHICO, Calif. – Dominican track and field saw some personal bests and new program records Friday and Saturday during the Wildcat Invitational at University Stadium.

Chico State, the host, ran away from the field for the team title for both genders with 315 points on the women's side and 296.5 points on the men's side. The Penguin women finished fifth in the 12-team field with 35 points, while the men finished sixth with 24 points.

LaNicia Ellis remained the star for the women as she finished second in the women's 400m finishing second as she edged Caitlyn Dougherty of Cal Poly Humboldt by .39 seconds. Tatayana Robles added another point in the 400m for Dominican as she finished eighth with a new personal best of 59.88. Ellis added a third-place finish in the 200m as she tied her personal best with a 24.97, Robles had a personal best of 26.89 in the same event with Valeria Romirez Contreras adding a third personal best in the 200m finishing in 29.54.

Sienna Fassett and Abbigael Williams competed in the first steeplechase of 2026 for the Penguins as Fassett finished second with a time of 13:39.25 with Williams finishing third in 13:58.17. Williams, Robles, Rodrigues teamed with Karsyn Walton to cap off the point scoring for Dominican with a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:08.89.

Jalydon Love, like Ellis, continued his hot start to the 2026 season as he claimed his second first-place finish while setting a new personal record in the process with a 48.53 finish in the 400m, more than half a second ahead of his closest competitor. While Emanuel Hurley and Jailen Truitt-Johnson did not finish as high on the leaderboard, each set a new personal best in the 400m was Hurley finished 12th with a time of 52.19 and Truitt Johnson was 15th with a time of 53.55. Love added a sixth-place finish in the 200m with a time of 21.87 points to capture three more points for Dominican.

Louigi Etta became the second Penguin to compete in the 3000m steeplechase and quickly became the school's record holder as he finished third in the field of seven runners with a time of 10:42.50. Diego Montag narrowly missed out on points for his team but claimed a spot in the top-10 of the 800m as he topped the Jacks' Nicholas Woolery by .25 seconds to finish ninth with a time of 1:58.75. Like the women, the men's final points came in the 4x400m relay as Love, Montag and Hurley joined Adrian Aguirre to finish in 3:26.18, the second fastest time in school history, to finish fourth in the field of 10 teams.

Dominican will divide its team between two meets next weekend with some athletes heading to the Capital Invite at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, while others compete at the Johnny Mathis Invite at Cox Stadium in San Francisco.
