CHICO, Calif. – Dominican track and field turned in a record-setting weekend at the Chico Invitational breaking four program records at University Stadium.
Chico State, the host, won the team title in both men's and women's by over 100 points over the nearest competitor. The Penguin women placed seventh with 18 points and the men finished eighth with 20 points.
Adrian Aguirre led the men on the track, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 14.26 after posting the top prelim time of 14.22.
Diego Montag added five team points with a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters in a school-record 1:55.66, lowering his own previous Dominican best by more than a second. Montag also scored in the 1,500 meters, taking eighth after crossing the finish line in 4:05.64.
Christian Alves added another record for the Penguins in the field, placing ninth in the shot put with a school-record toss of 12.14 meters. The junior also turned in a 10th-place finish in the discus at 39.65 meters, just 0.34 meters shy of the school record, and scored two points with an eighth-place mark of 40.82 meters in the hammer.
On the women's side,
LaNicia Ellis broke the Dominican record in the 100 meters, placing sixth in the final in 12.29 after qualifying with a time of 12.32, both marks topping the previous record of 12.73. Ellis also scored four points in the 200 meters with a fifth-place finish in 25.24.
Sienna Fassett added another school record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing third in 13:10.35 to better her previous Dominican record of 13:32.94.
Sarah Chavez also scored five points with a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:18.79.
Dominican returns to competition next weekend across three meets in Southern California: the Bryan Clay Invite from April 16-18 in Azusa, the Mt. SAC Relays from April 17-18 in Walnut and the Long Beach Invite from April 17-18 in Long Beach.
