Seventh heavens at Aggie Open

DAVIS, Calif. – Dominican track and field set new records Saturday as it competed at the Aggie Open at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track.
 
UC Davis won its home meet with 178 points on the men's side and 218 points on the women's side. The Penguin men finished with 14 points to take seventh overall with the women also placing seventh with 24 points.
 
LaNicia Ellis set a new personal and school record for Dominican in the 400m as she also finished with the top team among all collegiate competitors with a finish of 59.59 to top Francesca Castro of UC Davis by .04 seconds. Bella Bueno set two new school and personal records on the day, first in the 800m when she crossed the finish line in 2:18.88 to place sixth  just ahead of a pair of runners from USF. She then added to her spectacular day with a seventh-place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:54.29 to also surpass the automatic qualifying mark for the PacWest Championships in the event.
 
Gabe Sanchez set a new school record on the men's side on his first throw of the day in the shot put of 10.63m. The throw was the 10th best among all sections at the meet. Worthy Gutierrez set a new personal best in the 400m with a time of 50.04 to place eighth and top Curtis Reagor of Sacramento State by .06 seconds.
 
Dominican made an impact in the women's javelin led by Mikayla Surnip who sent her third javelin 31.71m, a new personal record, to place second overall. Caytlin Capulong was not far behind in fourth place with a throw of 31.48m. Capulong also set a new personal record in the 100m hours later with a finish of 12.97 seconds to finish 15th overall in the field of 33 at the event. Courtney Santos continued to be the pace setter for the Penguins in the 3000m setting a new personal best and breaking her own school record set in the first meet of the season with a time of 10:59.22. The time was 25 seconds better than her previous best time as she took 13th overall.
 
Dominican will be back in action Friday and Saturday next week at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento at Hornet Stadium.
