Stack leads Penguins at Otter Invitational

SEASIDE, Calif. – Ayden Stack closed with a steady 2-over 73 to lead Dominican men's golf Tuesday as the Penguins finished ninth at the Otter Invitational at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course.

Host CSU Monterey Bay captured the team championship at even par after rounds of 286, 298 and a final-round 276. Menlo finished runner-up at 12 over, while Cal State San Bernardino took third at 28 over. Dominican posted rounds of 303, 307 and 311 to finish at 61 over, one stroke ahead of CSU Dominguez Hills and 17 clear of PacWest opponent Vanguard.

Stack's best stretch of the tournament came on the back nine of Monday's opening round. After making the turn at 6 over, Stack played the final nine in 3-under 33, carding three birdies without a bogey to completely turn around his round and finish with a 75. The senior carried that steadiness into Tuesday's final round, opening with nine consecutive pars for an even-par front nine. After giving back three strokes early on the inward side, Stack birdied the par-5 18th to close with a 73 and move 15 places up the leaderboard into Dominican's top finishing position as he tied for 26th at 12 over par.

Mikael Khursheed also had a strong finish to his second round after he reached the turn at 3 over. Khursheed played the back nine at even par, then birdied each of his final two holes to close with a 75. Khursheed tied for 39th at 15 over. Carson Sorci finished one stroke behind Khursheed at 16 over, tying for 43rd. Sorci opened with Dominican's lowest first-round score at 2-over 74, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 18th.

Jerred Scott showed his biggest improvement in the middle round. After opening with an 80, Scott cut five strokes with a 75 on Monday afternoon before closing with an 80 to tie for 55th at 20 over. Jack Gladys rounded out the Dominican lineup in 66th at 25 over following rounds of 78, 80 and 82.

The Penguins also had Joseph Berggren and Owen Wackman competing as individuals. Berggren tied for 53rd at 19 over with rounds of 75, 81 and 78. Wackman improved in every round of the tournament, trimming four strokes from an opening 85 with an 81 in Round 2 before closing with a 78. He finished his final round with birdies on two of the last three holes and placed 71st at 29 over.

Dominican has now finished its fall slate of tournaments and will be back in action in 2027 as it prepares for the PacWest Championships.
