Director of Athletics
Amy Henkelman announced the promotion of
Fred Lin to Interim Head Coach of the Dominican women's volleyball team on Aug. 1. Lin has served as an assistant coach on the women's volleyball team since his hiring in September 2019, and will take over for former head coach
Yami Nolan as she relocates to the eastern United States for personal reasons.
"Coach Lin has been very attentive and proactive the past six months during challenging and difficult times," Henkelman said. "He will do a great job of focusing on the health, safety, development and athletic performance of our volleyball program."
Lin served in many capacities prior to Dominican, starting his coaching career at the age of 19. His most recent coaching experience came at UC Santa Cruz where he was the assistant and interim head coach for the women's volleyball team from 2017-2018. Lin also served as an assistant coach at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, for a year after completing his term as a women's volleyball graduate assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University in 1996. Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Lin gained coaching experience as the Hillside College as the women's volleyball head coach, preceded by roles as the women's volleyball assistant coach, women's club volleyball head coach and men's club volleyball head coach at the University of Michigan from 1984-1992.
"2020 has been a difficult year, and our volleyball family is not immune to the plight inflected by COVID-19," Lin said. "Coach Yamile Nolan had to make a tough decision with her family, and our team will miss her dearly. Personally, I want to thank her for having faith in me and the friendship she has shown the past year."

Lin also brings a great depth of knowledge from roles he's fulfilled outside of coaching, most recently in his current role as club volleyball instructor and mentor for City Beach Volleyball Club (CBVC). Prior to CBVC, Lin worked as a technical trainer for college and professional volleyball athletes with the FITS program in Palo Alto from 2011-2017, preceded by his role as the program consultant and head coach at Eclipse Volleyball Club in San Jose from 1999-2003. Lin also worked as the operations and technical director while coaching at Thunder Volleyball Club from 1993-1999 in Reseda, California, after completing his first coaching stint where he was the head girls club volleyball coach from 1992-1993 with Wolverine Volleyball Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
"I also want to thank Athletic Director [Amy] Henkelman for having the confidence in me to lead the team," Lin said. "I am very fortunate to inherit a great group of leaders in returning student-athletes, along with a strong group of incoming freshmen who will make contributions on and off the court. The future is bright for this program."

Lin's playing career came as a member of the men's club volleyball at the University of Michigan from 1984-1987. Academically, Lin earned a Business Management degree from Cleary University in 1996.
