SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball hosted the Lions of Vanguard University Friday night in front of a raucous home crowd at the Igloo. Dominican athletics honored their 2025 Hall of Fame class during the match, and it was also family weekend for the university, so the Igloo was rocking.
Coach Loesch went with a youth movement in this one starting freshmen
Cierra Ray,
Alexis Schwartz,
Ayla Johanski and
Kaylee Noa. They in turn stepped up and brought the energy against the Lions with Johanski feeding her teammates all night dishing out a team high 14 assists to go along with five digs. Schwartz, the Carlsbad native, gave the Lions fits throughout the match posting a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.
In the second set Schwartz rallied the team with three consecutive slams to cut the Lions led. Then midway through the set, senior leader
Avery Schneider flashed a couple impressive kills of her own bringing the home crowd to their feet. Schneider would finish the match second on the team with seven slams. The Lions would eventually pull away from the Penguins, but Dominican never stopped fighting.
Junior
Ashlyn Daugherty led the defensive front for the Pengs as she racked up a team high five blocks while
Kali Young was right behind her with three.
The Penguins will now hit the road and travel to Fresno Pacific Oct. 29
