RICHMOND, Calif. – Dominican women's golf finished second Tuesday after playing 36-holes over two days at The Big Freeze at Richmond Golf Club.
No. 28 Point Loma won the team title shooting a 19 over par, with the Penguins 11 strokes behind at 30 over par. Westmont was third at 36 over, with Westminster following three strokes behind and No. 32 Simon Fraser rounding out the top five at 44 over.
Madi Whitney paced Dominican at the tournament as she opened shooting even par on the front nine of her first round with a pair of birdies on her way to a 2-over 74. She slowed some in the second round but added a 4-over 76 on her way to tying for eighth on the individual leaderboard at 6 over. Christen Faith Legaspi was right behind her as she also had a brilliant start to the tournament with three birdies on the front nine as she finished with a 75. She had 12 pars in her second round equaling Whitney on the day to finish with a 76 and end the tournament in 11th at 7 over par.
Avery Kraatz kept pace with the two Penguin front runners through most of the first round but stumbled down the stretch to finish with a 6-over 78. She shook off the disappointment of her first round though and was one of the leaders on day two as she posted three birdies and nine pars to enter the clubhouse with a 75 and move up three spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 13th at 9 over par.
Faith Guevara experienced a similar rise in the tournament as she utilized the momentum from an eagle on 15 in her first round to move to an 8 over for the day and then led the team in the second round with a 2-over 74 to move up six spots into a tie for 17th at 10 over par.
Elexxis Mingming was a model of consistency posting rounds of 78 and 77 with three birdies in her final round to tie for 21st at 11 over par. Dominican had two individuals at the tournament as well as
Jenny Lee posted rounds of 81 and 76 to place 26th at 13 over par with
Jacie Johnson one stroke behind her tied for 27th after posting rounds of 80 and 78.
Dominican turns its attention to the Chico State Invitational at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, California, beginning Monday, April 13 for its final tune up before the PacWest Championships.
