Guevara Paces Penguins to Sixth at Estrella

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Faith Guevara opened the season with a top-15 finish while several Penguins delivered strong stretches during the final round as Dominican women's golf placed sixth at the RJGA Women's Shootout at the Estrella on Tuesday at the Golf Club of Estrella.

Cal State San Marcos claimed the team championship at 3-under-par 573, finishing four strokes ahead of runner-up Cal State LA at 1 over. Dominican posted matching rounds of 302 to finish sixth at 28 over. The Penguins finished 29 strokes ahead of PacWest foe Jessup while also topping Cal State East Bay by 20 strokes and Chico State by 22.

Guevara led Dominican from start to finish, the senior carded four birdies during an even-par opening round, playing both the front and back nine at even par. She added another birdie Tuesday to finish with a team-high five for the tournament along with 22 pars, tying for 12th on the individual board at 4 over. Madi Whitney was particularly steady throughout the tournament, leading Dominican with 23 pars and matching rounds of 76. She closed her final round with an even-par 36 on the back nine, balancing a bogey on No. 10 with a birdie on the par-5 16th while making par on the other seven holes as she entered the clubhouse tied for 25th.

Avery Kraatz finished one stroke behind Whitney, tying for 31st at 9-over 153 following rounds of 77 and 76. Kraatz closed the tournament with one of Dominican's best stretches, playing the back nine of her final round in 1-under 35. She birdied the par-4 12th and par-5 13th on consecutive holes and made par on each of her final five holes, finishing the tournament with four birdies and 21 pars. Jacie Johnson made the largest round-to-round improvement for the Penguins cutting 10 strokes from her score in round two with a team-best 2-over 74 on Tuesday to finish tied for 51st at 14-over 158. She played the front nine at even par in the final round with a pair of birdies and added another birdie on the back nine. Elle Astete joined Johnson in a tie for 51st at 14-over 158 after rounds of 77 and 81 in her collegiate debut. 

Dominican ranked among the tournament leaders in several statistical categories, finishing fifth in the field with 19 birdies and fifth in par-4 scoring at 4.21. The Penguins also recorded 102 pars over the two rounds.

Dominican returns to competition Oct. 5-6 at the RCA Electric Invitational at TPC Monterey at Pasadera in Monterey, California.
