MORGAN HILL, Calif. – Dominican women's golf increased its lead with each round as it took first at the RCA Electric Spring Invitational at Coyote Creek Golf Club.
After finishing the first round in a tie for first overall, Dominican increased its lead to 11 strokes over the final two rounds to win the team championship at 92 over par. No. 43 Hawai'i Pacific finished second overall among the five teams competing with a 103 over.
Cristen Faith Legaspi led the active team as she started with a 5-over 77 after going even par on the back nine of the round and finishing with a birdie. She repeated in round two with another 77 on the back of two biridies and 11 pars to finish the day in fourth. She maintained her spot in the final round with a 79 this time with her strength coming on the front nine where she birdied holes two and seven to finish tied for fourth at 17 over par.
Madi Whitney started slow with an 81 but then kept pace with Legaspi over the final two rounds posting a 77 and 79 to move up into sixth place at 21 over par.
Jenny Lee started and finished strong with rounds of 79 and 81 to sandwich a 13 over second round as she excelled on par 5 holes finishing tied for second among all golfers with a 2 under for the tournament. Lee tied for 12th overall with teammate
Avery Kraatz who was remarkable consistent in her improvement posting rounds of 83, 82 and 80 to move up the leaderboard slowly to a 29 over finish.
Ellexis Mingming started the tournament strong with a 1 under on the front nine of her first round but struggled down the stretch to post rounds of 84 and 87 on the first day. She shook off the disappointing start and eagled her third hole in the final round and added a birdie on hole six on her way to a team best 77 on Friday to help propel the Penguins well ahead of its opponents.
Dominican had several individual competitors at the tournament but none better than
Faith Guevara who finished with 12 pars and two birdies in the first round for a 3-over 75. She added rounds of 78 and 76, with 13 pars in her final round to finish second overall and one stroke behind the individual champion from Menlo at 13 over par for the tournament.
Dominican will return to action as it hosts The Big Freeze at the Richmond Country Club beginning Monday, March 23.
