VISTA, Calif. – Dominican men's golf opened the spring segment of its season with a ninth-place finish at the Fujikura Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Shadowridge Country Club.
No. 14 Western Washington won the tournament at even par with host Cal State San Marcos finishing second at 3 over. The Penguins started strong to finish at 30 over par to top three other PacWest foes in the field.
Jonathan Chen led the strong start as he had two birdies and four pars over his first seven holes. He was fantastic on the front nine in the first round with four birdies helping him finish the round with a 1-under 71. It was the back nine in his second round that was the strength as he finished with two birdies and seven pars on his way to a 2 under par moving him into the top-10. The final day was not kind to any Penguin as Chen finished with an 80 and slid into 27th overall at 5 over par on the final leaderboard.
Daniel Marmorstein was also a consistent leader for Dominican in the early rounds with four birdies on his way to an even par finish. In the afternoon, Marmorstein added a 1-over 73 before wrapping up with a 78 to tie for 38th overall. He tied with teammate
Jerred Scott who took a much different path to his 7 over par finish. Scott opened with a 5-over 77 in his first round and caught fire in the afternoon after an eagle on 17 began a remarkable stretch of 10 pars and three birdies. When he entered the clubhouse Monday night, Scott finished with a team-best round of 3-under 69. Scott also had the best final round for any Penguin as he had three birdies on his way to another 77.
Carter Degelman enjoyed a similar stretch as Scott as he opened with a 79, but also had an eagle on 17 in the second round to go with three birdies on his way to a 1-under 71. Degelman tied Chen with an 80 in the final round and finished 54th overall.
Joseph Berggren rounded out the team posting rounds of 80 and 76 on Monday before finishing tied with Scott for the best final round score of 5-over 77. Berggren moved up five spots after the final round into 60th at 17 over par.
