Pegnuins make program history at Tim Tierney Pioneer Invitational

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Dominican men's golf made program history at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Classic on Tuesday as the team finished tied for eighth at Corica Park Golf Course. 

No. 19 Cal State East Bay won the tournament after posting a 15 under to top No. 37 Colorado Christian by three strokes. The Penguins posted its lowest score at the tournament it has taken part in for the majority of their NCAA Division II history with a 3 over tying Cal State San Marcos. The previous low in the program's participation at Corica Park was a 7 over set in 2023. 

Daniel Marmorstein led the team by posting three consecutive rounds under par. Marmorstein was brilliant in the first round as he started the day with seven pars and two birdies. After his only bogey of the round on hole 14, Marmorstein birdied the next two holes and then parred out to finish at 3-under 69. He went on to add five birdies in the second round to add a 71 and finish the first day well inside the top-10. He once again got off to a strong start with a birdie on his first hole Tuesday adding four more in the round to finish the day at 2 under and move into a tie for seventh at 6 under with No. 116 Nic Jensen of Westminster. 

Jonathan Chen started slow for Dominican posted a 3-over 75 in his first round, but responded brilliantly on Monday afternoon with the lowest round for any Penguin at the tournament. Chen did not post a single bogey in the second round and finished with five birdies as he shot up the leader board with a 5-under 67. Chen ended the tournament with a 72 to tie for 17th with four other golfers including a ranked Kyle Krupp out of Hawai'i Pacific.

Carter Degelman improved with each round at the tournament posting a 76 and a 75 on the first day before a clean front nine with a birdie and eight pars propelled him to an even par to finish the tournament. Degelman tied for 63rd overall at 7 over par. Jerred Scott started strong with a birdie on his final hole giving him a 1-under 71 and he added a 76 and a 75 to finish a stroke behind Degelman to tie for 68th. Carson Sorci was the final member of the active team and added rounds of 74, 77 and 75 to tie for 78th at 10 over par.

Dominican will have several weeks to prepare for its next tournament as it hosts the Dominican Spring Invitational on April 6-7 at Sonoma Golf Club.
