SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
Avery Kraatz and
Jacie Johnson each earned top-20 finishes Tuesday to lead Dominican women's golf to seventh place at the Westmont Invitational at the par-73 Sandpiper Golf Club.
Host Westmont captured the team championship at 16 over after rounds of 299 and 301, finishing 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Hawai'i Hilo at 29 over. Dominican followed an opening 318 with a three-stroke improvement Tuesday, carding a 315 to finish at 49 over. The Penguins placed seventh in the nine-team field and finished 26 strokes ahead of PacWest opponent Jessup.
Kraatz and Johnson tied for 16th at 9 over, but reached that mark in very different ways. Kraatz opened with a 2-over 75 and put together one of Dominican's best stretches of the tournament on the back nine. After a bogey at No. 10, she played holes 11 through 16 at 2 under, sandwiching birdies on the par-5 13th and 15th around four pars. She closed with an 80 Tuesday to secure her second top-20 finish in as many tournaments. Johnson supplied the Penguins' biggest holes of the tournament, eagling the par-5 15th in both rounds. Her opening 77 also included birdies at Nos. 1 and 7 before she reached No. 15 and carded a 3. Johnson repeated the feat Tuesday, recording another eagle on the same hole after beginning the back nine with a birdie at No. 10. Those scores helped Johnson play the final nine at even-par 36 in the second round and close with a 78.
Faith Guevara was one stroke behind the Dominican leaders, tying for 20th at 10 over after matching rounds of 78. Guevara was especially consistent Tuesday, making 12 pars and limiting the damage throughout the round to remain inside the top 20 for much of the tournament before settling into a share of 20th.
Madi Whitney produced Dominican's largest round-to-round improvement. After an opening 88, Whitney cut nine strokes Tuesday with a 6-over 79. She started the final round with a birdie on the par-5 first and followed with five consecutive pars, playing her opening six holes at 1 under before eventually finishing 40th at 21 over.
Elle Astete matched Whitney's nine-stroke improvement, rebounding from a first-round 90 with an 81 Tuesday. Her final round included birdies at Nos. 3 and 11 as she finished 43rd at 25 over.
Dominican will conclude its fall season at the East Bay Fall Invitational at Stonebrae Country Club in Hayward with the first round beginning Monday, October 26.
