Final round pushes Penguins into top 10

DUPONT, Wash. – Dominican men's golf saved their best for last moving into a tie for ninth in the final round of the SMU Bishop Invitational at The Home Course.

Simon Fraser and Western Washington tied at 20 under after 54 holes with the Red Leafs coming out on top in the tiebreaker for the team victory. The Penguins finished at 11 over after shooting a 1-under 287 to move up the leaderboard into a tie with Saint Martin's and one stroke behind Hawai'i Pacific.

Jerred Scott was the most consistent Penguin throughout the 54 hole tournament. Scott opened up the tournament with three birdies and 12 pars in the opening round to finish even par. He had a quick break before the second round was played and added two more birdies and 12 more pars finishing 1-over 73, his only round over par for the tournament. Scott tied with two other Penguins for the second lowest score on his squad in the final round of play as he used five birdies to overcome a pair of double bogeys to finish with another even par 72. Scott finished tied for 26th overall at one over par.

Daniel Marmorstein opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 1-over 73 on Friday, tying Scott for the lowest round on the team in the second round. Marmorstein then had his best round of tournament on Saturday as he birdied on holes 13 and 14 before closing out with four pars to move into a tie for 28th overall at 2 over par. Jonathan Chen was the best Penguin to start on Friday as a birdie on his first hole was a sign of things to come as he added one more and 14 pars to finish at even par. Chen stumbled some in the second round finishing with a 5-over 77, but bounced back with the best round of any individual from Dominican as he had back-to-back birdies on holes two and three of his final round before making the turn at 2 under. Chen added eight more pars on the back nine to finish 1-under 71 and move into a tie for 38th at 4 over par.

Carson Sorci improved with each round played to begin his Penguin career as he opened with a 76 before posting a 2-over 74 in the second round. Sorci capped off his tournament with a 72 to tie for 45th overall at six over par. Joseph Berggren rounded out the team posting rounds of 74, 77 and 79 to tie for 63rd on the individual board at 14 over par.

Dominican will have a quick turnaround as it begins play at the RCA Electric Invitational on Monday at The Quail Golf Club  in Carmel, California.
