ALAMEDA, Calif. – Dominican men's golf finished 14th at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Classic on Tuesday at Corica Park Golf Course.
Cal State San Marcos won the team title with a 14 under par while No. 42 Sonoma State was in second at 12 under and No. 12 Cal State East Bay finished third at 11 under par. The Penguins were 31 over as a team to finish two strokes ahead of Westminster while also topping PacWest foes Chaminade and Westmont.
Carter Degelman got off to a strong start with three birdies and an eagle on the front nine of his first round on his way to a 3-over 75. He continued to improve as each round passed posting three birdies and 12 pars in the second round to finish even par and then capping off the tournament with a stellar back nine of five birdies on his way to a 2-under 70 to leap up the rankings into a tie for 29th at 1 over par.
Daniel Marmorstein led the Penguins in the first round with a very consistent performance of three birdies and 12 pars to enter the clubhouse at 1 over par and went on to add a 2-over 74 in Monday's second round. It was more of the same in the final round as he once again had three birdies and finished with a 74 to place 45th overall at 5 over.
Jerred Scott experienced some highs and lows at the tournament opening with a 77 before posting an 81 in his second round, but he bounced back in a big way on Tuesday with four birdies to finish even par in the round and tie for 84th.
Joseph Berggren had bookend scores of 80 with a remarkable 2-over 74 to help the Penguins to their lowest round of the tournament of 6-over 294. Berggren tied for 92nd overall with Harley Yang of Cal State Dominguez Hills at 18 over par.
Carter Bell was the final participant for the Dominican squad as he shook off a slow start of an 84 to post a 2-over 74 in the second round joining Berggren and Marmorstein to help the Penguins surge ahead of Chaminade. Bell ultimately finished 94th on the individual leaderboard at 23 over par.
Dominican will have a week off before heading north Monday, March 24 to compete at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational in a two day event at Sonoma Golf Club.
