Women's Track and Field

Penguins compete from North to South

Dominican track and field competed on opposite sides of the state as a few Penguins qualified for the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa with the rest of the team staying local to compete in the Chuck Buettner Twilight in Hayward.

Wakilli Bennett finished third among collegiate competitors in the 100m dash in a field of largely NCAA Division I athletes at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 10.52. His time beat runners from New Mexico, North Texas, Middle Tennessee State and Cal State Fullerton. Bennett took the track again for the 200m dash and once again finished third among all collegiate competitors as he also topped the current PacWest leader in the event Ajani Ince by 0.2 seconds. Adrian Taylor set a new personal best in the 200m as well as he crossed the finish line in 22.23 seconds topping runners from Western Washington, UC Colorado Springs and Fresno Pacific.

Back up north, LaNicia Ellis had yet another fantastic meet as she opened her day with a fifth-place finish in the 400m with a time of 1:02.26 out racing runners from Saint Mary's and Pacific. She one-upped herself in the 200m as she crossed the finish line it 26.49 to finish third as her results from both races earned 10 of the Penguins 12 points on the women's side. Cecilia Berardi earned the other two points as she took seventh in the discus as her third throw flew 23.59 meters to top Nadia Garcia of Pacific by more than four meters.

On the men's side, Worthy Gutierrez set a new personal best in the 400m as he finished in 51.18 seconds to place third overall topping runners from East Bay and Jessup while giving Dominican six points. Like Ellis on the women's side, Gutierrez took the track again for the 200m and added five more points as he finished fourth overall with a time of 22.84.

With Bennett racing down south, Omari Davis took the sprint duties up north and set a new personal best in the 100m with a time of 11.38 to finish fifth and add four points to the men's team score. Andrew Reinhard was the star of the day for the men as he finished sixth in discus with a throw of 29.89m, but that performance paled in comparison to his day throwing javelin. In the last field event of the day Reinhard was in first place with his first throw of 42.96m but he did not let it sit there improving on his next two throws with his throw of 45.04m to put over three meters between him and second place. Reinhard finished with 13 points total between the two events.

Javier Machado added three more points for the Penguins in javelin with a throw of 24.39m. Michael Gonzalez Lopez set a new personal best in shot put with a throw of 9.35m to finish eighth and hand one final point to the men's side.

Dominican finished 10th overall on the women's side with 12 points topping San Jose State by three, while the men's 32 points helped them edge out the Spartans by two points for a seventh place finish.

The Penguins will begin preparations for the PacWest Championships where they will compete next beginning Friday, April 26 at Westmont Track and Thorrington Field in Santa Barbara.
