SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican track and field opened its spring season with its first ever home meet in wet and windy conditions Saturday afternoon at San Rafael High School.
The women's side was the only one that had enough participation to tally a team score with the Penguins narrowly topping the Seawolves 46-44.
The teams got quick starts in the morning with the field events as a break in the rain opened the window for safe competition. Caitlyn Capulong capitalized as she recorded the first results of the meet on the women's long jump. Her mark of 4.48 meters was the second longest in Dominican program history, three-quarters of an inch shy of
Emma Wuelfing's program record.
Andrew Reinhard started his season off with the best throw on the men's discus as he narrowly missed breaking his own program record with a mark of 33.31 meters.
As the afternoon started so did the track events with the women's team leading the way once again in the 4x100 meter relay. Dominican's squad of Capulong,
LaNicia Ellis,
Shulien Kemmler Liu and
Morgan Semana finished in a time of 52.27 to top their Seawolf competitors by more than two seconds. Ellis then set a personal best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.04 to take the top mark in the event with teammate
Sarah Chavez close behind in second with a time of 1:05.90.
Javier Machado placed for the Penguins in the men's 800 meter run as the freshman finished with a time of 2:12.57 in the first race of his collegiate career to take third in the field of six.
Logan McNamar had one of the most exciting finishes on the track in the meet as he came from behind to beat former teammate
Jacob Potere down the stretch to win the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:56.64, the second best mark in Penguin program history.
Dominican will compete next at the Chabot Opener on Saturday at Chabot College Athletic Complex in Hayward.
