HAYWARD, Calif. – Dominican track and field enjoyed some early success as it competed Friday and Saturday at the Chabot Opener at the Chabot College Athletic Complex.
Both the men and women's team finished with 41 points at the meet with the women placing eighth in the field of 16 teams while the men placed ninth among 14 competitors.
The Penguins performed admirably in the javelin on both sides as
Caytlin Capulong finished second overall with a throw of 29.56m on two of her throws to earn her team eight points.
Emma Wuelfing was close behind in third as her fourth throw flew 28.37m to add an additional six points. On the men's side,
Andrew Reinhard set a new personal and Dominican record with a throw of 45.90m on his first attempt to place third overall and hand the men six points.
On the track, Capulong joined teammates
LaNicia Ellis,
Shulien Kemmler Liu and
Sarah Chavez to place second overall in the 4x100 relay race with a time of 51.63 to edge out American River College by half a second and earn eight points for their team score.
Courtney Santos added a personal best in the 1500m race as she crossed the finish line in 5:14.53 to place 11th overall.
Logan McNamar also set a personal best in the 1500m on the men's side as he outkicked a pair of runners from Cal State East Bay to finish fourth overall with a time of 4:02.09.
Adrian Aguirre then made history for the Penguins as he became the first to compete in the 110m hurdles and opened his season in the event with a first-place finish by more than a second with a time of 14.64 to deliver 10 points to the team.
Wakilli Bennett added another first place finish on the men's side as he outsprinted the competition in the 100m with a time of 10.61 in his signature event. The Penguins also saw success in the 800m as
Bella Bueno set a new personal best and posted the second-best mark in program history with a time of 2:27.64 to place fourth overall.
Stefan Mueller added a seventh-place finish on the men's 800m with a time of 1:59.91.
Dominican will compete next at the Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State beginning Friday at Warrior Stadium.
