SEASIDE, Calif. – Dominican men's golf finished 10th at the Otter Invitational to conclude its fall schedule Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Course.
Cal State Monterey Bay won the team title at 3 under par to edge out Chico State by a single stroke. The Penguins finished at 44 over par topping Academy of Art and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Sam Nielsen remained the most consistent presence for Dominican to start his senior year as he opened with a 4-over 76 with four birdies. Nielsen was only warming up as he had five bridies over his next 18 holes as he moved up the leaderboard with a 2-over 74. He maintained that pace in the final round but this time with 12 pars over the final 18 holes on his way to another 2 over par and he finished tied for 34th at 8 over for the tournament.
Derek Hamilton opened his tournament with a 6 over on his first round before riding a strong back nine in round two to a 3-over 75 and a move up the leaderboards. He eagled the first hole and added a birdie on the front nine of his final round as he finished with a 96 to tie for 47th overall at 13 over par.
Benjamin Gould had a similar tournament with an opening round of 7 over before shooting a 1 under on the back nine of his second round and finish with a 2-over 74 to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard. Gould then continued his strong play in the final round finishing with a 77 after a blistering finish of three birdies and six pars on his final 10 holes of the day to tie for 50th at 14 over.
Mason Mancasola got off to the best start for the Penguins on the first day as he opened with a 3 over 75 with three birdies in the opening round. He then followed that up by going 2 under on the back nine of his second round to finish with a 1-over 73 but he could not find his form in the final round falling into a tie for 54th after finishing the tournament at 15 over par.
Carter Bell posted back-to-back rounds of 8 over on Monday but came back and helped his team in the final round of play as he had four birdies on the day on his way to a 5-over 77 moving up three spots in the final round to tie for 64th.
