ALAMEDA, Calif. –
Claire Shubin claimed the first-ever individual title for Dominican women's golf with a 3-under 69 in the final round of competition at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park Golf Course.
"We played great today," head coach
Gary Nelson said. "I was really proud of the mental strength they displayed. When you are playing well you need to stay focused and play the shot at hand. I also loved how we finished. I'm so proud of Claire. This was such a big win for her. She has been close many times so this is huge."
Sonoma State won the team title shooting a 2-under 286 to move up the board and top host school Cal State East Bay by a single stroke. Cal State Monterey Bay was in third at 23 over and Biola in fourth at 24 over while Dominican and Academy of Art rounded out the top-5 as they tied at 25 over par.
Shubin was fantastic throughout the day as she followed up an opening bogey on the fifth hole with a birdie on six and another on eight. She added four birdies on the back nine to take over the top spot on the individual board and did not relinquish it down the stretch finishing the tournament at 3 under par. Shubin had tied for first place twice prior to this season before falling on a playoff hole, but this time no playoff was needed as she topped Drishti Karumbaya of Cal State East Bay by one stroke.
Ashley Pan regained her form from years past as she tore through the back nine with four birdies and five pars on her way to a final round of 3-under 69 to shoot up 20 spots on the leaderboard into 12th at 3 over for the tournament.
"Ashley really played fantastic," Nelson said. "[This round] was just what she needed. We have been seeing a lot of good golf from her lately and today she was able to put it all together and play with a lot of confidence."
Angelica Antonio added a 6-over 78 to finish tied for 53rd at 17 over par, while
Lauren Parayno's final round of 79 tied her for 39th at 13 over after 36 holes.
Alissa Salazar rounded out the active time tied for 58th at 19 over par with
Phoebe Sundberg tying for 30th after shooting a 10 over while competing as an individual.
Dominican will have a month to prepare for its next tournament, the Palm Valley Classic held at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona, beginning April 1.
