Men's basketball trio earns PacWest honors

IRVINE, Calif. — Dominican University of California men's basketball players Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten, Matt Hayes, and Josh Ramirez have been named to the 2016 PacWest All-Conference Team. Schwartz-Edmisten earned Third Team honors while Hayes and Ramirez earned Honorable Mention.

Schwartz-Edmisten has been the Penguins' leading scorer (15.4 ppg) and three-point shooter (65-of-137, 47.4 percent is second in the PacWest). He was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Basketball First Team and was nominated for the 2016 Allstate NABC Good Works Team®. The Sacramento, California native was named PacWest Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6. The senior guard scored his 1,000th career point on Feb. 13 at CBU and is the Penguins' all-time leader (DII era) in three-point field goal percentage, second in field-goals made and attempted behind Hayes, and third in points.

Hayes has started all but one game for the Penguins and is averaging 11.8 points per game and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game. He was also named to CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Basketball First Team, his second time earning the honor. The Yuba City, California native earned PacWest Player of the Week honors twice (Nov. 23-29 and Nov. 30-Dec. 6) this season. The senior guard scored a career-high 30 points in a win at MSU Billings on Nov. 27 and will finish his career as the Penguins' all-time leader (DII era) in points, field goals made and attempted, three-point field goals made and attempted, rebounds, games started, and minutes. Hayes was named to the PacWest Third Team last season.

Ramirez ranked fifth in PacWest in blocked shots (28) and field goal percentage (54.0 percent). The Chino, California native is averaging 14.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. The Chino, California native was named PacWest Player of the Week for Nov. 16-22.

Dominican's season will continue at the PacWest Championships at CU Arena on Thursday, March 3 at 12:30 p.m. The sixth-seed Penguins will face third-seeded California Baptist in the first game of the tournament. Tickets for the PacWest Championships are on sale here.
