Matt Hayes scored a career-high 30 points as the Dominican University of California men's basketball team drained 11 three-pointers en route to a 92-74 victory at MSU Billings in the MSUB Thanksgiving Tournament.
Dominican pulled away late in the half with three three-pointers and took 43-34 lead into halftime. The Penguins (3-2) shot the long ball even better in the second half (45.5 percent, 5-of-11). Josh Ramirez layup had the lead back to double digits.
The Penguins shot 52.5 percent (35-of-67) from the field and dished out a season-high 19 assists. Hayes had 18 points at the half and matched a career-high with six three-pointers on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. The senior also led the Penguins with nine rebounds. Ramirez added 16 points,
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added 15 with three three-pointers.
Ryo Tawatari also had a career night, matching his previous high of 11 points, plus career highs of five rebounds and four assists. Ramirez also pulled down five rebounds.
Anderson was one of four Yellowjackets in double digits and led MSUB with 17 points. Jordan Perry came off the bench to add 16 points. Preston Beverly added 12 points and Christian Evans added 10 points.
The Penguins will wrap up their appearance in the MSUB Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, vs. Alaska Fairbanks. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. Pacific.
