SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball (17-10, 12-9) hosted the Silverswords of Chaminade University Thursday night to open their final home stand of the season. March madness came early for these two PacWest teams as there are still five spots left to fill for the conference tournament next week.
Nick Medeiros posted a game high 27 points, but none were bigger than his last two points which came with the Pengs down one with 11 seconds to go. The Vallejo native got to his sweet spot and rose above the Chaminade defender to cash in the game-winning bucket for the Pengs 85-84.
Senior
Darius Best got the scoring started for the black and gold when he showed off his smooth looking jumper hitting nothing but net. Then it was fellow senior
Jorge Ochoa who caught fire as he knocked down back-to-back long balls. He would cap off the Pengs 10-0 run with a strong driving lay-up. Ochoa's bucket would force the Silverswords to call an early timeout to regroup themselves.
Coming out of that timeout Kent King would get the Chaminade offense going with a couple of buckets. Dominican would halt the Silverswords momentum with their back court duo of
Nick Medeiros and
Darius Best. Medeiros would splash home a couple of treys while Best continued to eat up Chaminade in the paint.
As both teams headed out for the second half, Chaminade would boast a slim four-point advantage. Ochoa would start the second just like he started the game, draining a three-pointer. Medeiros would also continue his momentum from the first half collecting a couple of nice looking lay-ups.
Michael Wilson would jump start the Pengs offensive intensity when he collected not one, but two sweet looking and-ones that brought the crowd to their feet. Then moments later teammate
Luke Ortiz delivered a strong and-one that was similar to the ones Wilson connected on.
Late in the second, Dominican's defense stepped up swatting away a couple of blocks and then coming away with crucial steals. Medeiors and Wilson each swiped two when Chaminade thought they had easy buckets.
The Penguins head into their final regular season against Fresno Pacific this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with a win and you're in the conference tournament scenario. Get your popcorn ready folks.
