ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's golf team turned in a strong final round at the Sonoma State Men's Invite for a third-place finish to wrap up the team's fall schedule.
The Penguins carded a two-under 286 to move up to third from fifth place. After an opening round of 304, the Penguins stood in sixth place. They finished day one with a second round of 291. Host Sonoma State won the tournament for the fourth year with a seven-under 857. Cal State East Bay finished in second place at 13-over 877. The Seawolves' Justin Shluker earned medalist honors with an 11-under 205 (69-70-66).
Senior
Drew Nelson led the Penguins in sixth place in the field of 62 with rounds of 74, 75, and a team-low 68 to finish at one-over 217. Sophomore
Nick Rivera tied for 16th place at six-over 222 strokes. Junior
Ty Macias tied for 18th with rounds of 75, 71, and 77 at seven-over 223 strokes. Sophomores
Brandon Brame and
Jake Quast finished in 27th and 34th place, respectively. Brame fired a 10-over 226 (75-77-74) while Quast shot a 15-over 231 (84-75-72).
Three Penguins competed as individuals. Senior
Joey Saad tied for 28th (11-over 227, 79-76-72). Junior
Brian Periquet tied for 39th (16-over 232, 78-79-75). Freshman
Paul Gunness-Bendetti carded a 23-over 239 (84-75-80) and finished in 52nd.
Dominican begins the spring on Feb. 13 and 14 in the Stockton Cactus Thaw hosted by Western New Mexico. The tournament will be played at Brookside Country Club in Stockton, California.
