POSTGAME "SPORTSNIGHT" RADIO SHOW FEATURING RIA FALEALILI
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team gave #23 Alaska Anchorage a run in the Lady Penguins' home opener at the Conlan Center on Monday night but could never quite outlast the Seawolves, falling in three straight sets, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.
Dominican (0-5) spotted the Seawolves (5-2) a 4-0 lead before scoring four straights points of their own to tie things at 4-4. UAA burst out for another five points to go back ahead 12-8 and scored the first set's final five points to take the opening set 25-21.The Lady Penguins took an early 4-1 lead in set two but UAA used a four-point run and pair of five-point runs to capture the second set 25-16. With the third set tied 11-11, UAA took advantage of two Dominican attack errors to put together a six-point run that broke the set open. Dominican scored five of the match's final seven points but it wasn't enough as UAA took the third and final set 25-21.
Jackie Matthisen racked up 12 kills for the Seawolves while McKenzie Moss tallied 9 kills. Siobhan Johansen made 15 assists and Adriana Aukusitino distributed 13 assists.
The Lady Penguins showed flashes, especially in set one when they laid down 12 kills on 27 attempts with just two attack errors for a .370 hitting percentage. Dominican was led by junior outside hitter
Cayla Morphew's nine kills on the night. Freshmen outside hitters
Seluia "Ria" Falealili and
Hannah Stocking added eight kills apiece. Stocking led Dominican with 12 digs on the night. Senior setter
Brooke Swingle dished out 31 assists in the losing effort.
The Dominican women return to action when they travel to the William Jessup University Warrior Classic in Rocklin, Calif. to face WJU, Vanguard University, Bethany University, Southwestern University, and Menlo College on September 10 and 11.
