SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Dominican cross country concluded its final meet before the conference championships Saturday at the Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park with a 10th place finish in the men's 8k open while sickness prevented the Penguins from placing on the women's 6k.
Cal Poly won the men's open with 36 points with UC Santa Cruz a distant second with 60 points. Dominican finished with 267 points to finish within the top-10 as it rested several top runners ahead of the PacWest championships.
Robert Dawson led the way for the Penguins as he set a new personal best with a time of 25:55.7 as he jostled for position with a pair of Banana Slugs down the stretch with only .4 seconds separating him from a 27th overall and 11th among runners representing full teams.
Diego Montag finished 66th ahead of a pair of runners from Fresno Pacific with a time of 26:46.5.
Louie Etta was next to cross the finish line in 124th with a time of 27:53.8 as he edged a runner out of Cerritos in a sprint for the finish line.
Diego Alas added a 155th place finish in the field of over 200 runners with a time of 29:10.1 with
Javier Machado close behind in 163rd with a time of 29:49.5. Daniel Salmeron Romo and Jailen Truitt-Johnson ran side-by-side throughout finishing back-to-back with personal best times of 30:37.9 and 30:40.4 in 179th and 180th places respectively.
Ishaan Iyer rounded out the group with a 194th place finish with a time of 32:32.9.
Sarah Chavez led the women's side as she finished 72nd overall with a time of 25:29.4 to beat out a runner from UC Davis.
Sienna Fassett was right behind those two as she crossed the finish line in 25:35.2 to top Mariah Dhillon of UC Merced to place 74th while also topping her personal best 6k by over a minute.
Valeria Ramirez Contreras was the final finisher for Dominican on the day as she placed 112th with a time of 31:50.5.
The PacWest Cross Country Championships will take place Saturday at Hawai'i Country Club in Waipahu, Hawai'i.
