SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Dominican track and field once again took on a NCAA Division I heavy field and saw some of its best performances yet at the Hornet Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
The Penguins got started off with a pair of personal and school bests in the 200m on Friday.
LaNicia Ellis raced to a school record finish of 26.23 to finish sixth in her section of the women's 200m to break her own school record by 0.7 seconds and beating runners from Cal State San Bernardino and Nevada.
Wakilli Bennett then took to the track and set a Dominican record by finishing in 21.19 seconds, first among attached competitors and beating rivals from Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific. The time was also good enough to hit the NCAA provisional mark in the event.
Bennett followed up with another record setting performance on Saturday in the 100m as he competed in the top head and finished second overall with a new program record time of 10.35.
Courtney Santos continued to shinne in the distance events for Dominican finishing with a new personal best of 5:10.89 to take 11th in her section.
Logan McNamar joined her with his own personal best in the 1500m finishing in 4:01.75 to take fifth in his section beating runners from Nevada and San Jose State.
Sarah Chavez had negative splits in her race to a new personal best in the 800m, breaking the tape in 2:33.17 to take second in her section and beating runners from Fresno Pacific and CSUSB.
Connor Chan set a new PR in the 400m with a time of 55.09 to take second in his section while Ellis added her second PR of the meet in the 400m as well crossing the finish line in 1:01.02 to take fourth in her section and top runners from Hawaii and UC Santa Cruz.
Dominican will compete next at the Oregon Preview beginning Friday at storied Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
