SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Dominican cross country competed in its final meet before the conference championships with the men finishing 15th and the women 14th at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational Saturday morning at Baylands Park.
Cal Poly won the team title in the men's 8k open section with 41 points while UC Santa Barbara came in second with 93 points. The Penguins finished with 427 points to top PacWest foe Jessup in the standings. UC Davis on the women's 6k open section with 41 points with UC Santa Cruz in second with 58. Dominican finished with 392 points overcoming illness to claim five finishers.
Diego Montag was the top finisher for the Penguins in the men's open as he edged out the Banana Slugs' Eduardo Palma at the finish line by a tenth of a second to finish 65th with a time of 26:31.3. Jeroam Wood-Piña was also in a battle down the final stretch with American River's Ian Bishop as the freshman runner pulled ahead to finish 206th with a time of 29:49.1.
Javier Machado added a finish of 31:19.6 to come in 232nd while Daniel Salmeron Romo set a new personal best of 32:54.4 to place 244th. Starlight (José) Lain-Straus wrapped up the group running through illness himself to finish in 260th with a time of 37:18.6.
Sarah Chavez set a new personal record while leading the women in the 6k as she shaved .3 seconds off her season opening time with a finish of 26:12.2 to finish 108th overall.
Miranda Lam outkicked Amy Becker of Cal Poly down the stretch to claim a 124th on the individual board with a time of 27:08.8.
Sienna Fassett was close behind crossing the line in 27:36.2 to place 129th.
Jaqueline Hurtado edged Erica Waseq of Jessup for 163rd with a time of 33:53.1 while Vivian Rodriguez topped the Warriors' Jaylee Hamiester for 165th after crossing the finish line in 35:43.7.
Dominican now looks forward to the PacWest Championships hosted Saturday at the Great Park in Irvine, California.
