Penguins finish 16th at West Regional Preview

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican men's golf finished in a tie for 16th in the field of 21 teams at the NCAA West Regional Preview on Tuesday at Foxtail Golf Club.

Cal State San Marcos was dominant in the field as they won the team title at 11 under par with host school Sonoma State finishing second at 1 under. The Penguins tied with PacWest foe Hawaii Pacific for 16th at 45 over par with Academy of Art finishing in a tie for 18th at 48 over.

Sam Nielsen led the way for Dominican as he got off to a blistering start with four birdies on the front nine in his first round including a bridie on nine as he made the turn at 1 under par. He then ended his round with another biridie to finish the day at 2-under 70. While he slowed some in the second round finishing day one at 5 over, Nielsen found his stroke again in the final round as he posted another strong front nine at even par. He ended the final round with a 74 and moved up three spots into a tie for 41st at 7 over par for the tournament.

Elliott Nielsen also enjoyed the front nine in his first round as he went one under with a pair of birdies and six pars on his way to an opening round of 2-over 74. He had three birdies in each of his next two rounds as he finished in a tie for 79th at 14 over par. Christian Schrodt had a strong first day as well, opening his day with a birdie before adding four more on his way to a 72. Schrodt then added a round of 4 over 76 in round two to lead all Penguins on the day. While he slowed in the third round, Schrodt tied with E. Nielsen for 79th after the final round of play.

Josh Morris enjoyed the back nine in his opening round as he tallied birdies on 12 and 14 with the highlight of the round being an eagle on the par-5 16 to finish even par on the segment and 4 over for the round. Morris added rounds of 78 and 79 to finish the tournament tied for 92nd at 17 over par with teammate Benjamin Gould who competed as an individual in the tournament. Derek Hamilton started slow but came through when his team needed him in the final round as he posted two birdies and six pars on the front nine on his way to a 3-over 75 in the round. Hamilton moved up five spots into a tie for 105th. Sean Buckles also competed as an individual finishing with a 30 over par to tie for 110th.

Dominican will return to action at the PacWest Championships beginning Monday at Wigwam Golf Resort in Goodyear, Arizona.
