Strong second round propels Penguins to tie for ninth

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Dominican men's golf finished tied for ninth in a shortened Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout as wind canceled the final round Tuesday at Corica Park Golf Course.

Cal State San Marcos ended as the team champion with a team score of 10-under 566 with Simon Fraser finishing second at 7 under par. The Penguins had a fantastic second round of 1-under 287 to move up three spots into a tie for ninth with Cal State San Bernardino and Stanislaus State at 7 over par.

Christian Schrodt led all Dominican golfers at the tournament as he cruised through the back nine of his opening round with seven pars to go with an eagle and a birdie to finish the round at 2-under 70. He then continued to excel in the second round with three more birdies including two on the back nine to finish with a 71. His overall score of 3 under par tied him for ninth on the individual board with Jordan Bean of Simon Fraser.

Josh Morris had a slow start to his tournament with a 3-over 75 in the first round, but opened his second round with a birdie and never looked back with two more in the round to go with 13 pars as he finished with a 1-under 71 in the second round to move into a tie for 40th at 2 over for the tournament. Sam Nielsen had a similar tournament with an opening round of 4 over par before flipping the switch and tallying two birdies and 15 pars to post a 1-under in the second round. His final score of 3 over par put him in a tie for 45th overall.

Elliott Nielsen and Benjamin Gould rounded out the squad as they tied with each other for 67th with completely different tournaments. E. Nielsen got off to a strong start as he was even par over the front nine on his way to a 3-over 75 in his first round and followed it up with a 77 in his second round to finish at 8 over par. Gould meanwhile struggled most in his first round finishing with a 78 before settling in and sinking three birdies in round two on his way to a 2-over 74.

Derek Hamilton and Sean Buckles competed as individuals at the tournament, with Hamilton tying S. Nielsen for 45th overall at 3 over par and Buckles finishing tied for 72nd at 9 over.

Dominican will  have a week to prepare for its next tournament at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational beginning Monday, March 27th at Turlock Golf and Country Club.
