Logan McNamar keeps pace with several NCAA Division I runners

Men's Cross Country

Penguins have strong team finish

SAN FRANCISCO – Dominican men's cross country recorded one of its best team finishes with three minutes separating the top five finishers to finish ninth while women cross country finished 15th.

Chico State won the team title on the men's side with 22 points and five top-10 finishers while claiming the women's title as well with 57 points to edge out Concordia University Irvine by a single point. The Penguins finished with 229 points to top the likes of San Francisco State, Alaska Fairbanks and Academy of Art. 

The top three runners for Dominican continued to close the gap between their times as Logan McNamar led the way with a 26th place finish in 26:01.5 to top Kanoa Blake of Western Oregon by two seconds. Stefan Mueller was 11 seconds behind him in 31st and Jacob Potere was 21 seconds behind McNamar in 36th. The group topped several runners from the region.

David Fernandez edged out Koen Ross of Alaska Fairbanks by half a second to finish in 107th while Javier Machado capped the top five also finishing under 30 minutes with a time of 29:13.5 to place 120th. Connor Chan finished in 32:43.7 to take 158th and Starlight (José) Lain-Straus rounded out the competitors on the men's side as Chan finished 158th with a time of 32:43.7 and Lain-Straus was 170th with a time of 44:05.6.

On the women's side, Courtney Santos continued to lead the pack as she crossed the finish line in 25:27.5 to place 95th. Bella Bueno, competing in her first race of the season, was next across the line with a time of 26:01.2 to top Angelique Martinez of Cal State East Bay for 103rd. Emma Wuelfing fought through an injury to finish 130th with a time of 29:02.5. 

Sarah Chavez was the next Penguin to finish with a time of 31:08.4 to place 135th overall. Samara Holshouser added a time of 35:54.6 in her the first cross country race of her career to place 138th, while Jaqueline Hurtado came in 139th with a time of 40:30.8 to round out the competitors.

Dominican women's cross country will race next at the Bronco Invite on October 14 at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale. The men's team will have a week off as it prepares for the PacWest Championships in Fresno on October 21.
