Five Penguins set Personal Records at the NCAA West Regionals

Penguins finish season with their best

MONOMOUTH, Ore. – Dominican men's cross country literally saved their best for last as all five runners set personal records and the team set a new best as a team taking 18th at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday morning at Ash Creek Preserve.

Chico State captured the team championship with 47 points with Azusa Pacific in second at 61 points in the field of 23 teams. The Penguins finished with 443 points to top Saint Martin's and San Francisco State in the top-20.

Logan McNamar led the way in the 10k as he maintained pace with the top pack for the first six kilometers. McNamar maintained a good pace and held off a late charge by Dider Sandoval of Azusa Pacific to finish 33rd with a time of 31:38.6. 

Jacob Potere and Stefan Mueller were with the next group of runners holding as they paced themselves for a good finish to the race. Potere pushed past Jerry Baltzer of Biola and Dustin Berger of CUI down the stretch to move into 63rd overall with a time of 32:29.1. Mueller jumped 12 athletes in the final four kilometers to finish 73rd overall with a time of 32:46.0.

David Fernandez followed a similar pattern as Potere and Mueller as he made his move over the final half of the race inching up four spots after the halfway mark and passing a pair of Central Washington runners to take 129th with a time of 34:33.8. Javier Machado steadily climbed up the leaderboard throughout his race passing David Bonds of Cal State LA and Jackson Bailey of Montana State Billings to the finish line. Machado finished 152nd with a time of 38:25.1.
