HAYWARD, Calif. – Dominican track and field finished in the top-10 in the field of both men and women at Chabot College Track Complex. The women finished fifth with 51 points of 16 teams to record a point while the men finished with 37 points to place seventh of 15 teams.

Morgan Semana,
Claire Brown and
Kiana Pelton set a strong tone in the 100 meter dash as all three finished in the top-10 of the preliminary heats to qualify for the 100 meter finals. Semana led all three Prenguins in the finals as she crossed the finish line in 13.38 to finish fourth to beat out Ogechi Achonwa by .05 seconds. Brown was right behind Achonwa finishing in 13.47 seconds to take sixth with Pelton took ninth with a time of 14.00.
Brown also scored team points for Dominican in the 200 meter dash after finishing eighth in the field of 20 runners by winning her heat with a time of 28.22 seconds. Semana was also the top finisher in her section with a time of 28.94 as she out sprinted Izzy Laspina by .6 seconds.
Julianna Mendez led the way in middle distances for the Penguins as she was the top NCAA Division II finished second overall in a field of 26 runners with a time of 2:20.31 beating two runners from host school Cal State East Bay. Mendez is now 17th in the PacWest in the event trailing CUI's McKenna Wilson by .5 seconds.
Emma Digman was the top finisher in section three of the 800 meter as she gained .5 seconds of separation from Olivia Lawson of Diablo Valley down the stretch as she finished with a time of 2:33.93. Both finishes were personal records for Mendez and Digman.
Emma Wuelfing, Isa Ferris, Digman and Mendez joined forces in the 4x400 meter relay to score eight more points for their team as they took second overall with a time of 4:36.79 to beat out a team from Holy Names by more than two seconds.
Wuelfing continued her strong showing in field events as she finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 4.50 meters to top Katie Sheldon of Sonoma State for the top finish among NCAA Division II competitors.
Caytlin Capulong set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 7.12 meters the top finish among Penguins in the event and just short of team points as she finished ninth at the meet.
Capulong left no doubt in the discus final as she finished seventh with a distance of 21.01 meters, her best mark of the season and the second best for Dominican this season.
Autumn Jordan, the holder of the best discus throw for the Penguins, also scored points in the event for Dominican as she was eighth with a throw of 18.03 meters.
Jordan scored again in the hammer throw as she took seventh with a throw of 16.14 meters, while teammate
Maya Brown took eighth with a throw of 10.76 meters. Dominican continued to show well in the javelin as Capulong was the top finisher among D2 competitors with a throw of 22.56 meters to take third overall. Wuelfing took fourth with a throw of 21.03 meters and Isabella Bueno was in fifth with a throw of 19.17 meters to top Claire Fisher of Cal State East Bay.
Men's Recap
The men had a lighter week of competition after being heavily involved in multiple meets last week.
Kieran Vrklan was the lone sprinter competing for Dominican as he finished with the top time in section four of the 200 meter with a time of 24.90 to beat Cameron Austen of College of the Sequoias by .65 seconds.
Stefan Mueller gave the Penguins six points as he was the top finisher for NCAA Division II in the 800 meters as he took third overall with a time of 1:59.82 in a very tight group as only .15 seconds separated him from Dominic Robles of Modesto Junior College for second place. Meanwhile Mueller was nearly eight full seconds ahead of Alastair Pardi of Holy Names who finished fourth.
Jacob Potere set a personal best in the 5k as he took second overall with a time of 15:57.75 to bring home eight points for Dominican, while
Connor Efstathiu finished fifth with a time of 18:05.58 to add another four points to the team total. The long distance runs continued to impress in the 10k led by
Xavier Mendoza who set a personal best of 33:01.59 to take the top spot in the event. Mendoza's time also now ranks 15th in the PacWest this season.
Jared Wright also set a personal best with a time of 33:15.72 to finish fourth at the meet and now ranks 17th in the PacWest, five seconds behind Ryan Negrette of Azusa Pacific.
Dominican also grabbed four points in the 4x400 relay as
Esondre Christian, Efstathiu, Mueller and
Cisco Gonzalez finished with a time of 4:00.67 to place fifth.
Dominican will compete next in the Johnny Mathis Inviational hosted by San Francisco State beginning Friday at Cox Stadium.
