SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Dominican women's golf shot its second lowest round in program history as it finished the first round of the Sonoma State Spring Women's Invite in second place at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
Cal State East Bay led the field at 7-over 295 with the Penguins two strokes behind them at 9 over par. The only round lower for Dominican came in 2015 at the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate where the Penguins shot a 5-over 293.
Claire Shubin had a strong finish as she birdied her final hole of the day to move to 1-over 73 and into a tie for fourth. She is three strokes behind Julika Grosspietsch of Menlo who is the leader in the clubhouse at 2 under par.
Angelica Antonio also had a strong finish with a birdie on 18 as she finished the day one stroke behind Shubin in sixth place at 2 over par.
Lauren Parayno had the strongest front nine for Dominican as she had two biridies and six pars and made the turn at 1 under. While she slowed down some on the back nine, she too was in top-10 after finishing the day with a 3-over 75.
Alissa Salazar tied Parayno at 3 over as she was the most consistent golfer as she led the field of 46 with 13 pars on the day.
Phoebe Sundberg was fantastic on the back nine shooting a 36 on her way to finishing the day tied for 16th at 6 over par.
Kelsey Bas competed for the first time this spring as an individual and finished tied for 42nd at 15 over par.
Dominican will look to capitalize on its strong start Tuesday as it tees off at 8:30 a.m. PDT in the final round of the tournament.
