LIVERMORE, Calif. – Dominican men's golf improved its second-round score by 16 strokes and finished 15th Tuesday after the final round of the NNU Poppy Ridge Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course.
Cal State East Bay took home the team championship after finishing at 7 over par after shooting a 2-under 286 in the final round. The Penguins shot a 17-over 305 to finish at 50 over par, 25 strokes ahead of Chaminade but not enough to catch up with Hawaii Hilo who finished 14th at 44 over par.
"Putting was difficult for us this tournament," head coach
Gary Nelson said. "We have to be better at lag Putting and making 5-foot putts."
Christian Schrodt started his final round on fire with back-to-back birdies on his way to a 1 under on the front nine. While Schrodt slowed some on the back nine, he finished the day with a birdie on 18 to enter the clubhouse with a 1-over 73 and move up 24 spots on the day into a tie for 50th at 12 over par.
Josh Morris was solid on both days of the tournament for Dominican as he recorded 10 pars and two birdies in the second round on his way to a 4-over 76. Morris tied for 46th at 11 over par for the tournament.
Sam Nielsen improved by six strokes in his second round of action, finishing a stroke behind Morris on the day at 5 over par, to move up into a tie for 71st at 16 over par.
Matt Fry finished strong with four pars, a birdie and only one bogey on his final six holes. Fry finished the day with a 7-over 79 to end the tournament at 15 over par and tie for 66th.
Christopher Steib had a remarkable 13 pars, but the other five holes marred an otherwise magnificent performance as he finished the tournament at 16 over par and tied for 71st.
Benjamin Gould competed as an individual and put in a solid second round of 4-over 76, a six-stroke improvement on his first round score, to finish at 14 over par and tie for 60th.
Dominican will compete next in the Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park Golf Course beginning its first round Monday.
