YOLO COUNTY, Calif. –
Wakilli Bennett made a mark for Dominican men's track and field Saturday at the Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track.
Bennett first competed in the 100m dash as he pushed Jamal McMurrin of Butte College for the top spot in their section, but McMurrin edged Bennett down the stretch crossing the finish line in 10.83 while Bennett finished in 10.84. Both runners trailed Benjamin Goodwin of UC Davis who ran a 10.75 with a more favorable tail wind of 2.2 meters per second in the earlier section while the second section had a 0.9 meter per second wind. While he took third overall in the event, Bennett was first among NCAA Division II participants.
"Wakilli and I are looking forward to the next few weeks," sprints coach
Matthew Ilarina said. "He'll have more opportunities to put his racing strategy together."
Bennett also competed in the 200m where he finished with a time of 23.29 to take sixth in his section.
"I just want to keep putting in the work so I can be ready for the PacWest Championships," Bennett said.
Dominican will be back in action Saturday at the Hornet Invitaional hosted by Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium.
