Penguins in 10th after first day of Bay Area Invitational

PLEASANTON, Calif. – Dominican men's golf ended the first day of the Bay Area Invitational in 10th place at Ruby Hill Golf Club.

Cal State San Marcos held a commanding lead on the team leaderboard after finishing the first 36 holes at 5 under par with Western Washington in second place at 9 over. The Penguins finished at 30 over par ahead of Colorado Mesa as well as PacWest foes Academy of Art, Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade.

Christopher Steib posted the lowest score for Dominican in the first round at even par on the back of three biridies. He then finished the second round with a 7-over 79 to tie for 35th. Matt Fry was one stroke behind Steib in a tie for 39th as he followed up an 8 over first round with an even par second round in the same fashion as Steib with three birdies and 12 pars.

Christian Schrodt was a model of consistency on a chilly windy day as he shot rounds of 76 and 77 with six birdies on the day to finish at 9 over to tie for 45th. Sam Nielsen had a strong start to the day with three birdies and 12 pars on his way to a 1-over 73, but struggled in the second round to finish at 11 over par in a tie for 53rd on the individual board. Josh Morris rounded out the team with rounds of 6 over and 7 over to tie for 56th overall.

Dominican will begin its final 18 holes Tuesday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. PST.
