Christian Schrodt posted the lowest round of any player to take an early lead atop the individual board and lead Dominican men's golf into seventh place at the end of two rounds of the CSUSM Fujikara Invite at Shadowridge Country Club.
Host school Cal State San Marcos led the field of 14 teams at 8 under par with Colorado State – Pueblo in second place at even par. The Penguins finished at 17 over par, seven strokes behind fifth-place Cal State San Bernardino, to edge out Chico State by two strokes.
Schrodt was nearly flawless in his first 18-holes as he started the day with a birdie and then went 11 holes without going over par. The highlight of the day came as he sank an eagle in the par-4 fifth hole to move to 8 under in the round. He finished the round with a 6-under 66 before adding five more birdies in the second round to finish the day at 8 under par, two strokes ahead of second place on the individual leader board.
Josh Morris made an immediate impact for the Penguins in his first tournament since joining the team over the winter break. He shot an even-par 72 with four birdies in the second round to finish the day tied for 31st at 6 over par.
Sam Nielsen began both of his rounds with a birdie on 17 on his way to a 10 over par after 36 holes played. Nielsen was tied for 51st in the field of 80 golfers.
Matt Fry finished at 13 over par after rounds of 79 and 78 to tie for 62nd, while
Christopher Steib bounced back from a slow start to shoot a 2-over 74 in the final round of play to move into a tie for 76th at 18 over par.
Dominican will return to the course Tuesday for its final round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. PST.
