WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Senior
Matt Fry led Dominican men's golf to a fifth place finish Monday after the first round of the 2021 PacWest Men's Golf Championships at Waikoloa Beach Course.
Hawai'i Hilo, the host for the tournament, finished tied for the lead with reigning champion Holy Names at 6 over par. Hawai'i Pacific was close behind in third at 7 over par. The Penguins finished at 27 over and lead sixth place Chaminade by 16 strokes.
Fry finished the day with three birdies and 11 pars on his way to a 1-over 71 to finish tied for eighth on the individual board, 2 strokes behind three players tied for first at 1 under. Junior
Christopher Steib finished tied for 17th at 6 over par finishing the day with two birdies and 11 pars.
Freshman
Elliott Nielsen was one stroke behind in a tie for 19th at 7 over par, while freshman
Sam Nielsen shot a 13 over par to take 27th. Sophomore
Derek Hamilton rounded out the team at 17 over par to finish the day in 29th.
Dominican will return to the course to tee off the second round at 7:30 a.m. HST.
