SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team completed a season sweep of Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday with a hard-fought 5-4 victory that came down to several close singles matches.
The Lady Penguins (6-9) took two out of three doubles matches to stake an early lead. Junior
Irina Morozova and senior Gaby Verspierien topped the Warriors' No. 1 doubles pairing of Davina Meza and McKenzy Harden 8-3. No. 3 doubles partners freshman
Francesca Katafias and
Emily Prescott defeated Aubree Brenda and Kaitlyn Ireland 8-2 for the edge going into singles play. At No. 2 doubles, junior
Marissa Frazer and senior
Ariana Paradis dropped an 8-5 decision to Kelsey Chrisco and Jessica Stokes.
"We had clutch wins up and down the lineup today. The girls came out in their singles and/or doubles matches and pulled out a tough win when we needed it," said Head Coach Alex Poorta. "Ariana and Frankie stayed composed and were mentally strong throughout their matches. Ariana dug deep and found a way to win with what she had today."
It was Paradis, playing at No. 6 singles, whose 6-4 victory over Brenda seized the team victory. The senior did the same in the two teams' first meeting on Feb. 10 when Paradis defeated Ireland 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot to stun the then-nationally ranked Warriors.
Prescott, in the No. 4 singles slot, topped Stokes 6-2, 6-2 and Katafias edged Ireland 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 5 singles match.
Morozova, who lost a super tiebreaker back in February to Meza, fell 6-2, 7-6 to the Warriors' top player. Verspieren battled back but dropped a super tiebreaker herself to Chrisco in No. 2 singles play, 7-6, 1-6, 10-6. Frazer was topped 6-2, 6-3 by Harden in No. 3 singles play.
Dominican is right back at it on Monday, April 8 with a 1:00 p.m. rematch vs. Fresno Pacific University. Dominican dropped that match, the team's season opener, 8-1 with Frazer picking up the lone win.
