SURPRISE, Ariz. – Dominican women's tennis was on the path to a comeback, but one moment turned the momentum allowing Biola to win 4-0 Thursday at the PacWest Championships.
The Eagles (12-9) won the doubles point behind a strong outing form Ivet Stancheva and Dafne Andres Paton who claimed a 6-0 victory on the top court. Alessia Radu and Kailee Mazzeo overcame an early deficit and then got a late break to turn the tide and hand Biola a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point.
The Penguins (10-10) began to pickup steam as
Maria Gavrilov made quick work of Stancheva in the first set winning 6-1 in No. 1 singles.
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja held off a late comeback and broke to win her first set at No. 3 singles 7-5. The Eagles worked leads in the first set with Alessia Radu winning 6-2 and Kim Yeo Kyung claiming a 6-0 victory to counter. The final two matches of the segment were close as Dominican's
Lorenza Foster-Simbulan won four-straight games to take a 6-5 lead in the first set, while Sofia Acuña overcame a 4-1 deficit to tie the first set 5-5 with Mazzeo. Acuña though suffered an injury shortly after leveling the set and was forced to retire handing Biola the 2-0 lead. Kyung won 6-0 and Radu finished seconds after with a 6-1 victory to clinch the match for the Eagles.
Dominican will conclude its trip to Arizona in the seventh-place match on Friday as they take on the loser of Stanislaus State and Menlo for a 1 p.m. MST match.
