Penguins win one for the Seniors

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis handed its two seniors a 4-3 victory over Westmont on Friday for Senior Day at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

Maria Gavrilov and Lorenza Foster-Simbulan built an early lead and held off a late comeback attempt to hand the Penguins (9-8) the 6-4 victory in No. 2 doubles to open the scoring in the segment. Kaylee Lopez and Sofia Acuña fell behind the Warriors' (8-12) Sabina Salva and Lauren Gee on the top court trailing 4-3 late into the set, but Dominican duo stormed back to win four of the last five games to take the 7-5 victory and secure the team point. Seniors Ana Rios and Deepalakshmi Vanaraja left their match unfinished in No. 3 doubles as the pair was tied 6-6 and in the early stages of a tiebreaker.

Foster-Simbulan wasted no time in getting the Penguins a 2-0 lead as she dispatched her Westmont competition in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. The Warriors began to mount a comeback as Thea Donarski won 6-1, 6-3 on the top court and Gee took a 6-4, 6-2 victory in No. 4 singles to even the team score. Dominican was a set up on the remainder of the courts when Gee tied the match, but Westmont was able to force third sets in two of them to keep hope alive.

Acuña won the opening set 6-3 in No. 3 singles, but Salva used a late push in the second set to build momentum in the second set and take a 4-2 lead. Acuña settled in and got a key break to tie the match 4-4 two games later. After holding serve, Acuña broke again to cap the comeback and win 6-4 to push the Penguins on top 3-2. With the final two matches in winner take all third sets, it was fitting that the senior captain Vanaraja once again found herself with the need to close out the victory. Vanaraja cruised to a 6-2 victory to open the match, but Justie Spitzer rallied in the second set to take the 6-3 decision. The third set was a contentious opening with fights over line calls and each player breaking service. Vanaraja shook off the disappointment of being overturned by the official and broke service for the second time before she really began to roll quickly winning four more games to take a 6-1 victory and allowing only one point to Spitzer over the final two games to will her team to the victory.

Dominican will have one final tune up match before the PacWest Championships as it welcomes in Stanislaus State to Castellucci Family Tennis Center on Saturday for a noon PDT match.
