Dominican falls to No. 46 Sonoma State

Irina Morozova and Gaby Verspierien won their doubles match on Saturday but the Lady Penguins fell to nationally-ranked SSU.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in doubles play but eventually succumbed 7-2 to No. 48 Sonoma State on Saturday at home in the Castellucci Family Tennis Center at the John F. Allen Athletics Complex.

Junior Irina Morozova and senior Gaby Verspieren paired up in number one doubles to top Sara Celma and Chloe Jolliff 8-6. Senior Ariana Paradis and junior Marissa Frazer won easily in number three doubles with an 8-2 victory over Megan White and Lauren Shafer. Freshman Francesca Katafias and junior Emily Prescott fell 8-2 to the duo of Lauren Ha and Sheena Johnson.

The Lady Penguins didn't fare as well in singles play to the number nine team in the region. Verspierien pushed her number two singles match to a tiebreaker after winning set two 7-5 but she eventually fell 4-6, 7-5, 11-13 to White.

Dominican faces Cal State Stanislaus, which has fallen out of the national rankings since the two teams last met on Feb. 10 when the Lady Penguins were victorious 6-3, on Sunday, March 7. First serve is slated for 11:00 a.m.
