Early doubles lead doesn't hold at #38 Art U

Irina Morozova teamed up with Gaby Verspieren for a number one doubles win and secured Dominican's lone singles victory on Saturday.
SAN FRANCISCO — An early 2-0 doubles lead didn't hold for the Dominican University of California women's team, which dropped its last regular season home match of the season on Saturday to #38 Academy of Art University.

Dominican (7-11) built the lead off of an 8-2 number one doubles victory by senior Gaby Verspieren and junior Irina Morozova over Nina Gajdosikova and Daniela Amelunge. Senior Ariana Paradis and junior Marissa Frazer needed extra points to best Michelle Dandik and Kinga Kurczbuch, 9-7, in number doubles play. Freshman Francesca Katafias and junior Emily Prescott were blanked 8-0 by Jenny Johansson and Lucia Zavarcikova.

The Urban Knights (17-5) turned the tables to make it 4-2 with wins in the three through five spots and clinched it with wins at all but the number one singles match, which Morozova secured with tiebreakers 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 10-8.

The Lady Penguins now head to Hawai'i to compete in the Pacific West Conference championships at Central Oahu Regional Park April 18 to 20.
