SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Freshman
Francesca Katafias and
Emily Prescott didn't lose a game in their singles matches on Saturday helping the Dominican University of California women's tennis team roll to a 9-0 victory over Holy Names University at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The Lady Penguins (2-6) won two matches by default as Holy Names (0-4) had only five eligible players suit up for the match between Bay Area and Pacific West Conference rivals.
“Our main theme was these are the matches where we need to concentrate and work hard in practice and get better,” said Head Coach Alex Poorta. “When you go on and play tough competition, these matches help us with confidence. This rewards the hard work in practice.”
Prescott, who raised her singles record to 3-5 on the season, also teamed with
Irina Morozova to win their No. 2 doubles match 8-0 while the Penguins' No. 1 doubles tandem of
Gaby Verspieren and
Marissa Frazer was victorious 8-2 over the Hawks. Frazer also won her singles match at No. 3 6-1, 6-0. Morozova and Verspieren won in straight sets as Dominican top two singles players, yet Katafias' win, her second in her first season with the Penguins, may have been the most impressive on the afternoon.
“Frankie utilized everything we have been working on in practice,” said Assistant Coach
Molly Aloia. “No matter what the score was she played at a high intensity level the entire time. She never let her focus or game level down.”
The Lady Penguins return to their home courts on Sunday, March 3 for another PacWest match. Dominican hosts Academy of Art in a 12:00 p.m. match.
