Lady Penguins edged by Sonoma State

Gaby Verspieren won both of her matches but Dominican fell 5-4 to Sonoma State on Sunday.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play but dropped a close 5-4 match to Sonoma State on Sunday.

Gaby Verspieren played well and earneds wins in both her No. 2 singles match against Megan White (6-2, 6-3) and with partner Emily Prescott in the No. 2 doubles match over Spencer Trotta/Sheena Johnson (8-1). Irina Morozova and Marissa Frazer earned the 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Frazer earned the No. 3 singles victory but Morozova fell in No. 1 singles though, 6-0, 6-1, to Sara Celma.

The Lady Penguins return to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Cal State Stanislaus, who is ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II. First serve is slated for 11:00 a.m. in Turlock.
