Women's tennis falls in opener at Fresno Pacific

Marissa Frazer recorded Dominican's lone point in Saturday's 8-1 loss at Fresno Pacific.

FRESNO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team opened the season with an 8-1 loss to Fresno Pacific University.

Dominican was swept in all three doubles matches. Irina Morozova and Marissa Frazer fell 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, as did Emily Prescott and Emily Verspieren in the No. 2 doubles matchup. Ariana Paradis and Francesca Katafias fell 8-0 in the No. 3 pairing.

The lone Dominican (0-1) victory aginst FPU (1-1) came at No. 3 singles with Frazer defeating Anna Mikhaylova 3-6, 6-2, 10-6. After falling behind early, Frazer rebounded with a convincing victory to even the match. The two went back and forth in the final set before Frazer recorded three straight points to build a lead, and ultimately secure the set and match point.

Morozova fell to No. 16 ranked Marie Boura 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match while #22 Erika Januskova, playing in the No. 4 spot, defeated Prescott 6-1, 6-3. Verspieren fell 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 position. Paradis played a close No. 5 match but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-4 while Katafias fell in No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-1.

The Lady Penguins now travel to Sonoma State for a match on Sunday, Feb. 3. First serve is slated for 11:00 a.m.
