Women's tennis stuns #20 Cal State Stanislaus

Francesca Katafias earned her first career individuals victory as Dominican shocked #20 Cal State Stanislaus 6-3 on Sunday.

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team notched its first win of the season on Sunday with a 6-3 upset of nationally ranked Cal State Stanislaus on its home courts.

Dominican (1-2) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play on the numer 20 team in NCAA Division II and number five team in the West Region, who fell to 1-1 with the loss. The No. 2 combo of Gaby Verspierien and Emily Prescott earned an 8-3 victory and the No. 3 combo of Ariana Paradis and Francesca Katafias earned an 8-4 decision. Irina Morozova and Marissa Frazer played well but fell 8-5 to Davina Meza and McKenzy Harden.

The number four through six players sealed the impressive victory for Dominican. Prescott earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory vs. Jessica Stokes, Paradis topped Aubree Brenda 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), and Katafias earned her first collegiate victory 6-0, 6-4. Frazer also earned a close No. 3 match, 7-6 (6-2), 2-6, 10-0, over Harden.

Morozova fell 7-5, 1-6, 10-7 in a close No. 1 singles match to Meza and Verspieren fell 6-4, 6-2 to Kelsey Chrisco at No. 2 singles.

"Today was a good team win," said coach Alex Poorta. "Knowing that we can beat a quality team like Cal State Stanislaus gives us a lot of confidence."

The Lady Penguins host Sierra College in an exhibition match on Tuesday, Feb. 12. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center. Then, Dominican heads to the Grand Canyon Tournament in Ariz. for four matches, including No. 2 BYU-Hawaii, No. 14 Grand Canyon, and No. 15 Cal State LA.
